Day 18
Read Psalm 73
Here is a modern hymn written using the words of Psalm 73 by Kevin Twitt and Mac Purdy. 1995 Kevin Twitt Music.
Surely God is good, To all the pure in heart (vs. 1)
But as for me, my feet had almost slipped (vs. 2)
I nearly lost my grip (vs. 2)
For I envied, the arrogant, They are free, from my burdens (vs.4-5)
Surely I, in vain, Have kept my, my heart pure (vs. 13)
And surely they are strong and free from trials (vs. 5)
While I am so confused (vs.16)
Then I entered Your holy place, Then I saw their destiny (vs. 17)
Surely, they’re cast down, As those on slippery ground (vs. 18)
As dreams fade when we wake, so they become (vs.20)
Completely swept away (vs. 19)
In my heart I was arrogant, Like a beast before You (vs. 22)
Yet always, You are near, You guide me by Your Word (vs. 23)
And always, my Lord God, You are my strength (vs.23-24)
My portion You will be (vs. 26)
You’re my refuge, my Sovereign Lord, I will sing of Your awesome deeds. (vs. 28)
The hymn perfectly captures the movement of the Psalm. It begins with the Psalmist asking the question: Why do the wicked always seem to have the good life? He envies the arrogant because they are (seemingly) free from burdens. They seem to be strong and free from trials. But, then the Psalmist enters into the “holy place” of God and sees the destiny of the wicked. They are on slippery ground, and will be completely swept away like dreams that fade in the morning. Then, he recognizes his own arrogance and lack of a pure heart (vs. 22). And finally he ends with assurance in God’s strength. His comfort and strength are not found in his own ability (vs. 26) but in being near to God.
